Plays most codecs with no codec packs needed - MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, MKV, WebM, WMV, MP3. I am trying to download vlc to play movies but it is not working. Plays Files, Discs, Webcams, Devices and Streams.

I tried playing a DVD movie with the Videos software included with Ubuntu, it opens the movie but then it just gives a blank screen, I can click the Pause/Play button but no picture or audio. VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.
